Arrest in Etan Patz Murder

Thirty-three years ago today, Etan Patz disappeared along the two-block route to his bus stop, the first time he ever walked it alone.

Today, Pedro Hernandez, age 51, of Maple Shade, New Jersey, was arraigned for the murder of six-year-old Etan Patz.

I've written an in-depth post about the case on Women of Mystery, including the difficult revelation that the evidence was within reach of the original investigators, yet they chose not to pursue it.

  2. It's so sad, Charles. I don't feel sympathy for the alleged killer, but I don't know how he lived with himself all these years. How frightening that his first impulse upon seeing Etan was the desire to kill him. I'm upset about the police work back then. I hope the NYPD explains WHY they failed to interview Pedro Hernandez. I know there's a need for corroboration beyond a confession; I think his name on the original police report as being an employee of the bodega right next to the bus stop is corroboration enough, along with sworn statements from all the family members and others he "confessed" to. Such a tragedy all around.
